Giving Back
From the beginning, Gaston County PAWS has worked hard to improve and expand the habitat for our local wildlife, and continues these efforts through our various projects. The following are just a few of our ongoing projects:
Wood Duck Nesting Improvement Initiative
The Wood Duck is one of the most beautiful and elusive water birds within this region. They are found in back water marshes, small and large river systems, and even in small isolated ponds throughout this area. The PAWS group has been very active in building, placement, and maintaining these critical nesting sites. These birds generally return to their place of birth to once again lay their eggs and raise their young.
Fish and Bird Habitat Improvement Projects
Wildlife and Industry Together (W.A.I.T.)
Gaston County PAWS has partnered with several industries in our community, and through the North Carolina Wildlife Federation W.A.I.T. program, worked with them to creating or set aside areas within their location as a place for wildlife to thrive and coexist with them. Those participating industries display signage with the W.A.I.T. logo, letting the community know that they are a partner in conserving, preserving, and protecting our wildlife.
HABITAT LOCATIONS
Each underwater habitat location is marked by a buoy, and the elevated Osprey nesting platforms are marked with Gaston County PAWS signs. Please practice proper boating and approach the underwater habitat locations in a safe manner. We also ask that you remain a safe distance from the nesting structures for the protection of the birds.
If you happen to see anything wrong at any of these sites, please report it to us through our contacts page.
